With the release of NumPy 2.0, it is necessary to make some changes to the Python codes, and test them with the new version, while maintaining backwards compatibility. This should be done in a separate branch.

Applied NumPy 2.0 fixes according to Ruff rule NPY201 in branch numpy2, and merged into master. Should be no backwards compatibility problems. Will keep this issue open, and keep numpy2 branch open, until NumPy 2.0 testing carried out.
