ST77916 1.8” round spi display

Hi I would like to use this display in a project as it is the best size for my requirements. I have a project running in a 1.28” display and would like to migrate it to the new size.

There was a thread about this but it is locked, I followed every suggestion for the arduino ide that I use but nothing is working. I copied the files given for drivers, used all the correct release libraries but my display stayed dark other than one edge. The serial monitor prints the colour infill it should be displaying and there is a tiny part of the edge that has those colours displayed.

I’m using an esp32 s3 zero same as the original poster of the test files. Wired the same using the 15pin display and header. Modified TFT_eSPI library Compiled without issue in arduino ide. Serial monitor reporting back fine and the pixels at the edge of the display show a hint of the colour it should be.

I have been on and off this for weeks researching and it’s driving me crazy. Has anyone had any luck

I don't have my display with me now so I can't confirm the part number. I will a couple of hours later, I will.
So backlight is lit, there are some pixels visible, tells me some communication is happening.

As far as I remember, if you activate only the backlight, and not do tft init, there should be a random colored full display. At least after a power cycle (wait for 15+ seconds powered off just to be sure).

can you send your user setup.h file also?

Thank you, I too am not at my display or computer. I believe the user setup h file will be as it came from fresh library install.

I am using the user setup select h file from the download zip from I believe your post about the ST77916 displays. This has the user_setup.h commented out and the include user setups/setup27tk_1_8round_st77916_esp32.h file uncommented.

I did double check but didn’t alter anything within either file. I did alter pins but altered back. I had exact same screen result on different pins.

Have you tried lowering the SPI clock?

Thank you again for your replies, your screen is exactly the same as mine.
I have tried the spi frequency down to 2000000. No change at all.
On some resets of the esp32 the screen has a dull colour background that gradually faded.

I don’t know enough about the background workings of the libraries only the usual things to change to select displays. This one really does have me going in circles. The only difference I have to you initial setup is I’m running release 2.3.8 not the release 2.3.2 of IDE.

I am on 2.3.8 also. For last resort for the library side, here is my full library. it is set to work with this display. Tested just now to make sure it works. As usual make sure to make a backup of yours.

Thank you, I have just downloaded and swapped libraries. See yous has a lot more pin definitions. I changed the pins to what I had setup and it’s exactly the same as what I was getting. Swapped to the other screen I’d bought in same order and same. I might try and order some more screens from a different supplier.

Really appreciate your help.

I might also do a full reinstall on this laptop as I’d set it aside purely for this project

I will update if I get any further.

Strange. I wonder what we are missing. Shortest answer is that the displays are broken. But two of them?
I wish I could have your displays to test on my hardware.

You are getting "red, green, blue" serial output means S3 is not in reboot mode. Driving backlight through a transistor.

Would be nice to see signals if you have a logic analyser

Thank you, I really don’t know what it could be. I’m going to order some new displays.
I have it wired very basically, I was going to use a transistor for the backlight but realised the test sketch didnt have backlight control.
I have the backlight wired to the 3.3v rail on a breadboard through a resistor to control current draw. Reset is wired to the 3.3v too.
Connected to the esp32 s3 zero is 3.3v, ground, CS, SCL, SDA, DC (labels RS pin 5 of my display pin out)

I had thought about offering to send you the screens lol.

These new displays will take a couple weeks to come through unless I’m lucky. So will test what I can before they arrive.

Hiya, no luck as yet. I had the new displays turn up snd still no success. I’m taking a break from this at the moment but will comeback to it at some point. Extremely frustrating as these are perfect size
