Mac OS, in particular OS9 and earlier, like to create a multitude of special files and folders to store metadata etc.

Mac OS Finder will treat these as hidden system files, and I think we should do the same, or perhaps have a flag that turns the filtering on and off at the choice of either library users or end users
one idea would be that afpcmd has the filtering off by default, while GUI clients hides them by default
