Shadow pages in Navigation Component

Is there any guidance on the proper use cases where shadow pages make sense when using the Nav component? The current documentation is pretty vague on when its safe to use. Is there a recommendation on the max number or size of the site etc. Trying to help provide guidance to clients on when it can be used that won't be a maintenance nightmare or performance issue because you are adding additional nodes
