Welcome to the CKAN Ecosystem Catalog! This guide will help you get started with using and contributing to the catalog.

## Overview

The CKAN Ecosystem Catalog is a centralized platform where you can:
- Discover CKAN instances from around the world
- Find CKAN extensions to enhance your data portal
- Share your own CKAN site or extension with the community
- Connect with other CKAN users and developers

## For First-Time Visitors

### 1. Explore the Catalog
You can browse the catalog without creating an account:
- Visit the [homepage](https://ecosystem.ckan.org/) to see featured sites and extensions
- Use the search bar to find specific sites or extensions
- Apply filters to narrow down results by category, region, or version
- Click on any site or extension to view detailed information

### 2. Understanding the Catalog Structure

The catalog contains two main types of entries:

**CKAN Sites**
- Live CKAN instances operated by organizations worldwide
- Includes government portals, NGOs, research institutions, and more
- Each site listing includes URL, description, organization, and metadata

**CKAN Extensions**
- Plugins that add functionality to CKAN
- Includes GitHub links, documentation, and compatibility information
- Browse by category (visualization, harvesting, authentication, etc.)

### 3. Create an Account (Optional)
While browsing doesn't require an account, you'll need one to:
- Submit new CKAN sites or extensions
- Curate your pre-listed Sites, Extensions or Datasets
