Description
Problem
Openverse aims to expand its coverage of openly licensed cultural heritage works.
Currently, many European museums and archives are underrepresented.
Integrating the Europeana Search API would enable access to millions of digitized works from across Europe under open licenses.
Description
The Europeana API provides programmatic access to over 50 million cultural heritage records from museums, libraries, and archives.
It offers metadata such as:
- title
- creator
- data provider
- rights/license information
- media URLs (images, audio, video)
Alternatives
-
Alternatives such as Wikimedia Commons also provide open content.
-
Stick with the existing data sources.
Additional context
Europeana’s data is harvested from galleries, libraries, archives, and museums across Europe.
The API allows easy filtering by license type ensuring compliance with Openverse licensing standards.
Implementation
- I would be interested in implementing this feature.
