The Overview section of the docs suggests that 1 star should be the default rating of newly imported images.

Since darktable assigns a 1 star rating to newly-imported images by default, ...

1. Set the lighttable view to only show images with a rating of exactly 1 star using the _view_ setting on the [top panel](../user-interface/top-panel.md). Since darktable assigns a 1 star rating to newly-imported images by default, this will show all of the images you have just imported. You can use the [collections](../../module-reference/utility-modules/shared/collections.md) module to further refine your selection if needed.

Which does seem to agree with the config on master for this ui option

However, in practice newly imported images appear to be unrated.
