• Can you point me to a paper or two where they do the opposite: Make
  the model at the lower resolution, smoothing the 100 micron flux?

Brent did modified blackbody fitting for M31 in his recent MNRAS paper and smoothed all bands to 500 micron resolution. Is that what you mean?
