Possibility/discussion in combining SINGLE_FILE , WORKERS (WASM / Web) and disabling SharredArrayBuffer ?

Hello to all,

About subject and project (already exist but need improvements on communication speed and interface count):

• project is for internal use / without internet (preferable without local server)
• cross platform / for web browser / easy to redistribute
• Websocket (no SSL) for network devices communication
• WebSerial for locally connected device (requre Single file or SSL content)
• WebUSB in future, for new interface connection

Conclusion:

• for WebSerial and non SSL Websocket - single file work, do not work from local server .
• SharredArrayBuffer - only in SSL content or local server .
• for quick communication Worker would be nice.

So need help in compiling project with such parameters.
So far project is without worker.
Tried compile worker example:

• no possible to single file so far, could achieve single file by hand
• result require SharredArrayBuffer , why ? Worker could be used without it (tested).

Any help / ideas are welcome !

The -sWASM_WORKERS feature should now support -sSINGLE_FILE and no longer produces the extra .ww.js file as of #24163. That change will be in the next release which will hopfully be later today or you can try it today using emsdk install tot.

However, if you use wasm workers then SharredArrayBuffer is always required since that is how the workers communicate. So SharredArrayBuffer is a hard requirement for threads/workers.

I'm not familiar with WORKERS, but played a bit with worker in JS with "onmessage"/"postMessage" without need for SharredArrayBuffer.
In other threads I read this way is deprecated in emscripten, because of speed / copying messages (correct me if wrong).
Can we still keep it , possibly with WASM_WORKERS=3 or other new flag?
Or possibly there is better way?
My goal is to move WebSerial communication to Worker , with messages from main loop to getPort/Open/Close/Send , and from Worker getting Status/Errors/Receiving data...

If you just want to use a web worker without shared memory you can use the worker API for that: https://emscripten.org/docs/api_reference/emscripten.h.html#worker-api

wasm workers and pthreads are inherently shared memory and run the same program on each workers. The worker API above can be used to perform work on other threads without sharing memory (or the main program).
