mpich install error involving cuda

I am installing firedrake in ubuntu 18.04 with cuda 9.1 installed. During the mpich build I run into an error involving cuda. The below is from configure.log (attached). I've also attached firedrake-install.log. Any suggestions to fix this?

I had the same issue. A workaround proposed by @JDBetteridge was:

export PETSC_CONFIGURE_OPTIONS="--download-mpich-configure-arguments=--without-cuda"

The formal solution would be to upgrade cuda (and probably nvidia-driver-...) on your computer; see
