Salesforce Services extension becomes unresponsive on every VS Code startup

Type: Performance Issue

1. Open VS Code with the Salesforce Services extension (v67.7.1) enabled on a Salesforce DX project.
2. Wait for the workspace/extensions to activate.
3. The "Salesforce Services" extension immediately reports "Unresponsive" and freezes.

This happens 100% of the time on every startup, regardless of the project state or prior actions taken in the session.
