When discussing with @shiltemann today at GCC's CoFest, she suggested us to write an issue about some feedback we had regarding Learning Pathways in GTN. As we continued investigating/testing at CoFest, we figured out a few more things to discuss, so below is our global feedback, focusing on the 'Onboarding for new contributors' learning pathway.
This pathway seems to be focussing in fact on contributing to existing materials, not taking into account people that would want to make their first steps providing a new training material. It could be of interest to have something for the new materials, since in the 'contributing' topic it is not easy to spot what to look at first appart from the 'Before you start' section. We wondered whether it could be relevant to include information for this specific case by using kind of a "Choose your own adventure" feature in the already existing learning path? It could also be just "Option 1" and "Option 2" directly in the text, in case there is no share part accross the two adventures, but maybe at least modules 0, 2, and "Reference: Cool content" could be shared maybe? We have no strong position on that, just giving feedback on thoughts we had.
Other overall feedback is about reader experience. We missed a little some highlights in the text (use of bold or things like that), and also maybe more "listing" for the main points. For example, there is this nice 'Learning Objectives' button that display a list, it could be nice to have this used also for other important points.
Last, we missed a little of some "requirements" section at the begining, for people to have an overall idea of the resources they will need to proceed (for example, GitHub account, need for a fork, planemo install...).
Additionnal note: could be nice to have the 'Contributing through GitHub' section somewhere at the beginning of the Learning path, maybe
Here is our feedback, with things that could be discussed if relevant, but more importantly, 💖 thank you 💖 for the resource, it's great to have this as learning path!
