also .split(" ") (a string consisting of just one space) is slightly magical. It splits on any amount of consecutive whitespace, including tabs and newlines, it ignores leading and trailing whitespace in the line. This differs from, let's say, split(",").
and, just .split does the same as .split(" "). This magic is inherited from perl, and useful for shell scripting and general text processing.
