When I'm on my mobile I miss the sidebar I have on the Desktop to quickly jump to a heading or related content.

When I reduce the desktop browser the sidebar disappears silently.

In both cases maybe a hamburger menu to open up the sidebar would be nice (something alike when using the search button.)

In general, I agree. I took some short cuts re. mobile (the top menu should/could also be expandable).

I'm not totally convinced that it's worth complicating the setup for this, though. Reasoning:

  • Most users are on desktop (see GA stats below)
  • I suspect almost all who uses it for reference (while developing a Hugo site) is on desktop.

I got your point, but sadly I'm one of the 20%. which is one of 5. not that low imho

I guess most of all users use it as a reference

also some kind of standard on most sites to provide their sidebar as expandable on smaller screens

...maybe I can dream of a christmas present 😀
