Smart Form Filler - Version Roadmap Issues

Milestone 1: Cloud-First Architecture (v3.0.0)

Epic: Pure Frontend Architecture

Goal: Transform Smart Form Filler into a pure frontend application that communicates directly with cloud AI APIs, eliminating the need for a local Node.js backend server.

Target Release: Q3 2025

Features to Implement

1. Remove Node.js Backend Dependency

  • Priority: High
  • Effort: Large
  • Description: Eliminate the current Node.js backend server and implement direct cloud API communication from the browser extension.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Remove all backend server code and dependencies
  • Update extension to work without local server
  • Ensure all existing functionality is preserved
  • Update documentation to reflect serverless architecture

Technical Tasks:

  • Refactor API communication to use direct cloud APIs
  • Remove backend controllers and routes
  • Update extension manifest permissions
  • Create migration guide for existing users

2. Direct Cloud API Integration

  • Priority: High
  • Effort: Large
  • Description: Implement direct integration with multiple cloud AI providers (OpenAI, DeepSeek, Anthropic, Google).

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Support for OpenAI GPT models (GPT-4, GPT-3.5-turbo)
  • Support for DeepSeek models (DeepSeek-R1, DeepSeek-V3)
  • Support for Anthropic Claude models
  • Support for Google Gemini models
  • Configurable API endpoints and authentication

Technical Tasks:

  • Create base API adapter interface
  • Implement OpenAI adapter
  • Implement DeepSeek adapter
  • Implement Anthropic adapter
  • Implement Google Gemini adapter
  • Create adapter factory pattern
  • Add error handling and retry logic

3. Secure Credential Management

  • Priority: High
  • Effort: Medium
  • Description: Implement secure storage and management of API credentials within the browser extension.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Encrypted local storage for API keys
  • Secure credential input interface
  • API key validation and testing
  • Environment-based configuration support
  • No credentials stored in plain text

Technical Tasks:

  • Implement encryption for credential storage
  • Create secure credential input UI
  • Add API key validation functions
  • Implement connection testing functionality
  • Create credential management interface

4. Enhanced Performance Optimization

  • Priority: Medium
  • Effort: Medium
  • Description: Optimize performance with direct API communication and improved caching strategies.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • 40% faster data processing than current backend-mediated approach
  • Implement intelligent request caching
  • Add background processing for large requests
  • Optimize payload sizes for API calls

Technical Tasks:

  • Implement request caching system
  • Add background processing with Web Workers
  • Optimize API request payloads
  • Add performance monitoring and metrics

5. Multi-Provider Support Interface

  • Priority: Medium
  • Effort: Medium
  • Description: Create user interface for managing multiple AI providers and switching between them seamlessly.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Provider selection interface in extension popup
  • Dynamic provider switching without restart
  • Performance-based provider recommendations
  • Fallback provider configuration
  • Provider status monitoring

Technical Tasks:

  • Design provider selection UI
  • Implement dynamic provider switching

Testing and Quality Assurance

6. Comprehensive Testing Suite

  • Priority: High
  • Effort: Medium
  • Description: Develop comprehensive testing for all cloud providers and scenarios.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Unit tests for all adapters
  • Integration tests with each cloud provider
  • Cross-browser compatibility tests
  • Performance benchmarking tests
  • Security testing for credential handling

Technical Tasks:

  • Create adapter unit tests
  • Implement integration test suite
  • Add cross-browser testing
  • Create performance benchmarks
  • Conduct security audit

7. Migration and Documentation

  • Priority: High
  • Effort: Small
  • Description: Create migration tools and comprehensive documentation for the new architecture.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Migration guide for existing users
  • Updated setup documentation
  • API configuration guides
  • Troubleshooting documentation
  • Video tutorials for setup

Technical Tasks:

  • Write migration documentation
  • Update README and setup guides
