At the moment, fields containing HTML tags are passed into dbGaP XML files unchanged (e.g. "1, Yes <b><i> [Complete QC2a-d]</i></b> | 0, No <b><i> [Form complete]</i></b> | 99, Unknown <b><i> [Form complete]</i></b>"), but some tags (e.g. <font>) may interfere with annotation or display. I'm not sure if Roger cleans that up, or if that's something we need to fix here.

It looks like these are stripped out during ingest into the HEAL Platform MDS (certainly the example included in this issue, which is https://healdata.org/mds/metadata/HDPDD00008, doesn't have the tags). A bit more investigation would be useful to figure out where that is happening.
