2024 Review + 2025 Roadmap

As the year comes to an end, I wanted to review what we've accomplished in 2024 and provide the roadmap for 2025. This year was all about building the foundation for the next 12 months, so we can ship high quality features faster and with more confidence.

It has been amazing to see all the feedback you have shared about Hey API online. A special thank you goes to our early adopters and sponsors @awesome-algorand @kinde-oss @stainless-api.

We started the year by resolving some of the most requested features from the original package openapi-typescript-codegen. Ferdi (@ferdikoomen) was kind enough to provide us with the platform so our releases had an instant impact.

Later in the year, we shifted gears from bug fixes towards infrastructure. This work resulted in the experimental parser release which will become the default parser in 2025.

It has been great seeing the issues slowly transition from bug reports to feature requests. While we constantly evaluate the roadmap, these are the features we have currently planned for the next year.

Experimental Parser

After months of testing, the experimental parser will become the default option. The last remaining feature is backporting OpenAPI 2.0 support to avoid breaking changes for the existing users.

SDK Enhancements

While the current SDKs work well, there are a few frequently requested features we're aiming to add, such as instantiable SDKs, different arguments signatures, and case transformations. This list is not exhaustive since SDKs are by far our most popular feature.

Native Plugins

We will keep expanding support for the most popular packages. You can help us prioritize them by voting on issues.

Miscellaneous Features

This list is not exhaustive, but here's a teaser of what's coming:

• granular customizations
• multiple configurations
• more OpenAPI specification features
• robust CLI support
• telemetry

Release 1.x

Once we've cleared enough major roadblocks, we will remove all legacy and deprecated features, and release the first stable version. This is a huge milestone we're hoping to achieve within the next 12 months.

The Codegen Platform

Some of you have already inquired about our planned commercial offering. This product is currently codenamed 'The Codegen Platform' and we're still exploring the most interesting problems to solve.

We will privately trial this service in 2025, and if it proves to be a good product, we will open it up to the wider community. It will be free to try, with pricing to be announced at a later date.

Thank you @david-plugge, me neither! I hope the latest releases feel more and more polished. There are a few features that need to be implemented before v1 as they have the potential to introduce painful breaking changes, but then it should be ready!

This library has been pretty handy for us. We honestly have not had much reason to update it since ~ July 2024. However, I see a lot of new capabilities we should consider taking advantage of.

The part that made this work so well for us was that this tool wasn't trying to make crazy assumptions about the output, keyholing what we can do with it. The raw output of service classes allowed us to write our own small client generation script that consumes the output of Hey API to create a more salient API client.

Supporting react state management & reactivity through something like Tanstack would be a big next step for us. Looking at the docs I see plugins for this, these may or may not work for the need, but the existence of plugins is great news! This means we can probably write our own plugin to do things we want.
