We all know Rockstar is quite litigious and so the project should be renamed as to avoid the possibility that they will sue or send a C&D. Love what this project is doing, but I also don't want to see it go dark as a result of unfortunate garbage from them.

Don't bother, the developer won't. I've seen this over and over and over again. The whole point is that it WILL be taken down. This ideally generates press, shows off their talent, and secures them a position somewhere. The best example I can think of is Prime 2D, where it was basically meant to show off their technical skills and not actually meant to last longer than it takes to get noticed by the press.

If what I was saying was wrong, they would have already renamed it now in the wake of the wave of takedowns over the past year or so. They certainly wouldn't be realizing this from a comment from 3 hours ago on a project that made it's first release in 2019.

Download the source while you can, periodically pulling to keep it up date, and continue it under a different name when it get shut down.

i dont agree first idk about the dev but he doesn't seem like he's planning a heist lul, second this project is completely independent from r* no reversing, no game assets, nothing, just unity code, and you need the game to run it so its more likely to go under the modding category. its more like a reimplementation, even tho r* seems to be winning the re3 dmca takedown, who knows if they can legally take this down either but imo its less likely they have the rights to do so;

and renaming the project wont help as it doesn't change the content or what the project already is

Nothing you said has any relation to whether something violates trademarks. Trademarks and copyrights are entirely different beasts. And with that, everything you suggest is contrary to what has been the law of the land for decades.
