All Maps are colorless

So far I haven't managed to add color to a map, which somehow seemed for me to be the point. For example the test directory (plenty of test fail, btw) the choropleth.svg is just plain black and white.
Same for bounds-bbox-styled.svg. If I understand it correctly, france should have a different color. Adding a sea does not have any effect, too. It can be reproduced with http://kartograph.org/showcase/editor . Adding a sea layer does not change anything, even if it seems it should add a blue sea. The Editor Is BTW great, but very difficult to find.
