Not sure what's wrong here.

FWIW I tried upgrading magit to the latest in melpa, but then magit stopped working altogether and I had to revert to my backup .emacs.d

Contemporary Forge needs contemporary Magit. Please update Magit and investigate the issues you are having with that. I cannot help you with ancient development versions.
