Windows Terminal 1.25 is here, with a bunch of new features in tow!

It sports a new search experience inside the Settings page, the ability to edit actions, command palette entries and key bindings with a rich editor--rather than just their key bindings--support for Kitty's keyboard protocol and two completely new community translations!

Note

This release has been somewhat slow to roll out via the Store (and we are tracking down the issue with the folks who own the Store), but it is generally available today (March 5th, 2026) both here and via WinGet.

Changes

• wt -pos now supports single-value inputs, e.g. wt -pos 40 which will position the window at 40, 40 (Fix initial position parsing from -pos tag (#4247) #19409) (thanks @KavishaHaswani!)
• conpty: after a resize, we will now request a new cursor position to keep our internal state in sync for e.g. PowerShell and other callers of GetConsoleCursorPosition (Fetch the terminal cursor position after a resize #19535) (Stop leaking CPR sequences #19620)
• In the Settings UI, we have moved color pickers into a lighter-weight flyout rather than a whole dialog; as a result, you can now type into them (Replace NullableColorPicker ContentDialog with Flyout #19572)
• We have added the VSCode Dark Modern and Light Modern color schemes (Add VSCode Dark Modern and Light Modern color schemes #19728) (thanks @AndyBodnar!)
• We have once again enabled PGO, which should result in a 10-25% throughput increase on output (build: make the PGO build work again; upgrade nuget #19810)
• We've removed the temporary "New" badge from the Extensions page as of 1.25 (Remove 'New' Badge from Extensions page #19637)
• We've rewritten how cursor and attribute blinking is handled to reduce the sheer number of timers and threads we create (Move all blink handling into Renderer #19330) (Fix cursor blinking before being focused #19652)
• You can now choose an icon for any folder in your New Tab Menu (Add IconPicker to New Tab Menu folders in SUI #19591)
• You can now configure a profile's tab color in the Settings page (Add tab color setting to settings UI #19351)

Accessibility

• Screen readers now get more information about the font features and axes controls in the Settings (Add AutoProp.Name to font features/axes controls #19712) (Localization Updates - main - 01/07/2026 03:05:43 #19716)
• Search now reports richer result information to screen readers (Improve screen reader announcements for search box #19726)
• The Settings UI now offers tooltips for some of its longer sidebar items (Add tooltips to SUI NavItems and color schemes #19714)

VT Support

• Applications that use OSC 52 to write to the clipboard will now only be allowed to do so when they are actively focused, to prevent clipboard hijacking (OSC 52: Gate clipboard writes on focus to prevent background clipboard hijacking #19357) (thanks @DivInstance!)
• Sixel images are now parsed more performantly (Improve sixel performance #19639)
• We will now consider ITU T.416 24-bit colors with a color space of 0 valid (Fix: Allow SGR color space ID 0 to be valid #19768) (thanks @Vallabh-1504!)

Bug Fixes

• Elevated and non-elevated Terminal windows will no longer delete each other's saved session data (Separate pruning of elevated/unelevated session buffers #19546)
• Pasting text while in Broadcast mode now works slightly better (Fix pasting text via mouse when broadcast input is enabled #19879)
• Previewed input actions will no longer stick around (forever!) after you dismiss the Command Palette (Check for command palette's visibility before responding to search text changes #19885)
• Search will now more reliably focus results that are offscreen (Fix search not scrolling to result past view #19571)
• Terminal should no longer jump around frantically while you have an active search while printing output (Avoid scrolling when the search is open #19775)
• The command palette entries "Move tab forward" and "... backward" now indicate whether that means left or right (Updated strings of "Move tab" commands to include "left" and "right" #19708) (thanks @vamsiikrishnaak!)
• Underlines will no longer render in the wrong color when you have an active text selection (atlas: display underlines in the right color when they're highlighted #19872)
• Unfocused Acrylic once again works in the tab row (Fix tab row acrylic material in unfocused windows #19647) (thanks @AbhishekGiri04!)
• We will now more reliably detect URLs which are scrolled partially off-screen (Fix detecting partially visible URLs #19878)
• We will now no longer emit stray whitespace characters into your settings.json file at the end of a line that opens up an object (vcpkg: move to jsoncpp 1.9.6, import an upstream whitespace patch #19836)
• When you enter "Mark Mode" while a search is active, we will now start with that result marked (mark mode: begin selection at focused search result #19550) (Fix dangling search selection using viewport pos #19603)
• When you enter "Mark Mode", we will now start marking at the top of your scroll area rather than the top of the active viewport (mark mode: begin selection at viewport when scrolled up #19549)
• Terminal should no longer fail to launch applications on clean boots with error code 0xD000003A (conpty: Make sure ConDrv is loaded before doing ConPTY things #19901)

Conhost Changes

These changes may be available in a future version of Windows available in the Windows Insider program.

• conhost: the new Atlas engine is now available behind the UseDx registry key (HKCU\Console, DWORD, set to 1 to enable) (atlas: build with Windows Razzle; fix inbox build #19848)
• conhost: the original rendering engine now supports bold fonts (Add bold font support to the GDI renderer #19441) (thanks @alabuzhev!)
• conhost: we've fixed a longstanding bug in paste, which would result in some input characters being dropped if the output CodePage could not represent them (When translating clipboard to numpad events, use the *input* CP #19511)
• conhost: we have rewritten the legacy MSAA accessibility integration, as well as some of the modern UIAutomation one as well (Rewrite the MSAA/UIA integration into conhost #19344)

Yeah for OpenCode x Windows users we suggest Windows Terminal.

I was using 1.23 which had empty bracketed paste events when pasting an image - which we used as the event to detect it.
for 1.24 I think it was patched, there is no event and no kitty protocol - so we can't detect ctrl+v image pastes.

But with 1.25 we can use kitty events to detect ctrl+v released - even though ctrl+v itself is handled for the paste windows terminal internally.

Sounds like for the OpenCode Windows users I can suggest 1.24 once its backported! But for myself I use the Preview as my daily driver.

Huh. I knew about empty bracketed paste but I wasn't aware that it worked as expected in 1.23! I thought we just always threw out empty pastes.

Yeah tbh I miss the empty bracketed paste escape codes as a ctrl+v hook... but kitty will fill in this hole for us :D

Users on Windows Terminal 1.24 as of now can't paste images tho... if they really want it I will get them onto 1.25 Preview

I used 1.23 for ages not really knowing I needed to upgrade
