Bug Summary:

Basically my C++ extension constantly re-invokes Find All References and iterates very slowly over the files. I have a pretty beefy computer (R9, RTX 3080, proper SSDs) so I doubt it's got hardware issues.

Causing me, more often than not, to not be able to do a simple refactor of a method name upon other problems:

To be clear, I have followed almost every guide out there and tried a lot of approaches:

• registered CMake as my configuration provider without providing includePath in the c_cpp_properties
• did the same but with includePath
• used only includePath
• explicitly excluded the build/ folder from the c_cpp extension in the settings
• did so with and without a path to the compiler
• scoured the microsoft doc for the c_cpp_properties
• created a new VSCode profile and set up the whole environment with the most bare extensions for the job

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open any CMake / C++ project with my VSCode install
2. see this is happening (i doubt this is a common problem as i barely find any resources of it happenign to others)

Expected behavior:

I would like for this to not happen :/

@0tii The warning output window appearing should be fixed with 1.23.3.

We don't know what could be causing the Find All References to be invoked. Do you have any other extensions installed that could be invoking it? If you set your C_Cpp.loggingLevel to "Debug" (temporarily) can you see what logging occurs before the find all references related logging?

Okay -- sorry, I didn't see you had provided the logging -- yeah, the find all references appears to be coming "out of nowhere". Do you repro the same issue with other workspaces/languages such as TypeScript or with our extension disabled?

@0tii What logging do you see on startup with no files open initially and then doing a Reset IntelliSense Database command? Do you see it do some tag parsing and then finish using CPU? Does it trigger the find all refs with no files open?

I'm thinking the warning message about "some references may be missing" (tag parsing not finished for the workspace) maybe related to root cause issue, since that is also not expected.

@sean-mcmanus Thank you for your replies, it means a lot.

I have created yet another new profile, installing not even any quality of life extensions and could confirm the extension working properly.

So i ended up constantly switching between the profiles, removing extensions until I found a possible culprit.

I wouldn't have expected it from an extension that does nothing but add a color picker to non-CSS files, but apparently the extension Color Picker Universal (jeronimoekerdt.color-picker-universal) causes this issue.

With this extension installed, this is being spammed in the info log constantly:

When uninstalling the extension, this stops happening and my refactors stop being canceled.

Edit:

I made an issue in the extensions repository and identified the likely cuplrit. This extension apparently constantly fires the vscode.executeReferenceProvider command, which I imagine re-triggers the find all references, resulting in incomplete workspace parsing and thus the specific errors i encountered.
