A teammate's question goes back to the bot that handed the work on, and its follow-ups reach that work - #4016
When a Chief handed a teammate work and the teammate ended on a question (a NEEDS INPUT: park, or a card from its ask tool), the Chief's reply through coordinate_bots in a later turn started a new job in the teammate's thread. The parked job kept waiting with its question unanswered, and the Chief never got that work's result. A correction sent while the teammate was still working only queued behind the running job, and the Chief could send only to its standing thread or a new one, never to one particular thread it had opened.
What was already covered on main (#3930, via the train #3999)
At every level the requester is resumed with the teammate's question ("[OpenMausBot question from @… on assignment …]").
At Full access the question is the requester's to decide, and its default stands when the requester doesn't answer in that turn.
A parked question no longer expires after 30 minutes. inputWaitMs is infinite, and no host sets it.
The requester's answer counted only when it named the question with answers, or came from the very turn that carried it. In any later turn the reply became new work. This PR fixes that.
One rule, the same on the desktop and on a Cloud
What the bot that handed work on sends to the thread that work runs in goes into that work.
Waiting on a question: the requester's message answers it, in any later turn, with no answers needed. That covers a parked NEEDS INPUT: question and a question card its turn is waiting on. The work runs on with @Clive answered: "…", its card says Clive answered, and it reports once to the turn that handed it out. A sign-in, or any other card only the person can act on, is never settled this way.
Still running: the message goes into the running turn, which reads it at its next step, the same way a person's line sent mid-turn does. The server reuses the loop guard's steer pair for this. The thread shows the line as Clive's, the requester's chat shows "Sent to Mira", and the work's one result still comes back once. Only when the engine can't take a message mid-turn does it run next, as new work, which is today's behaviour.
Same turn: work handed out in the sending turn stays its own job, so two assignments sent in one turn are still two.
thread takes a thread id: coordinate_bots thread now also accepts the id of a thread the sender opened on that teammate (a receipt's threadId, or list_threads). Any other id is refused with where ids come from. The tool description stays short. It grew by 114 bytes, and every profile's budget baseline moved by exactly that.
The requester knows what's waiting: each of its later turns lists a teammate stopped on a question, with the question's own words (escaped), its thread id, and a note that sending the answer there answers it.
No settings or switches. Rooms, consultations and EXTERNAL runtimes keep today's behaviour.
Tests
server/teammate-follow-ups.e2e.test.ts (new) runs on one server with the scripted fake engine:
Q1: a later reply answers a NEEDS INPUT: question. No second job, the card is answered by Clive, and one result comes back.
Q2: a later reply answers an ask-tool card the teammate's turn is waiting on. That turn carries on with the answer, and Clive's turn is told the question's words.
F1: a correction reaches the running turn. The receipt is injected, the line from Clive is in the thread, and the one result carries it.
F2: a thread id sends the follow-up to that thread, and its result comes back.
F3: a thread Clive didn't open is refused, saying where ids come from.
F4: two assignments from one turn stay two, even when the first is already running.
Q1, Q2, F1, F2 and F3 fail on main. F4 guards the same-turn rule.
server/host/question-routing.test.ts covers the relay's rules: which thread, which sender, an ended requester, sign-ins, work handed out this turn, and an engine that refuses a mid-turn message. server/runtime/envelope.test.ts covers the framing and escaping of the message handed into a running turn.
Changed deliberately:
The case in server/direct-coordination.e2e.test.ts that expected a follow-up to wait behind the running request now expects it in the running turn.
The relay unit test that read a same-sender message as new work now expects it to answer.
agents-proxy.test.ts uses a non-id value for its refused thread case.
The tool catalog goldens are regenerated.
Mutation checks: 12 of 12 killed. Each break was confirmed failing, then restored:
the thread rule;
the sign-in exclusion;
the same-turn exclusion, against the unit tests and against F4 (the call-site wiring);
the Team Cloud question-routing and question-cards e2e;
the agents catalog and bridge goldens;
the language guard (src/locales/server-lines.test.ts) and both ratchets;
tsc -p tsconfig.server.json and oxlint.
Not in this PR
The requester isn't woken the moment a live ask card opens in work it handed on at "Ask me first". The person still sees the card (and, on a Team Cloud, its inbox copy) and a notification, as before. The requester's next turn is told the question, and its reply answers it. Waking it at once would need the runtime to track a question while a turn runs.
A teammate's message that has to wait behind a long tool call doesn't stop that call. The person-first stop stays the person's own, as before.
Stopping the requester's conversation still leaves a teammate's parked question open (unchanged).
You can now direct work to a specific thread opened on a teammate, as well as to their standing thread or a new thread.
Follow-ups can answer a teammate’s pending question or reach work already in progress when supported. Messages from the bot that handed off the work can also answer its pending question without naming the assignment.
A separate assignment remains queued rather than being merged into work already underway.
Documentation
Updated guidance explains thread selection, follow-ups, and question-answering behavior.
…nd its follow-ups reach that work
When a Chief handed a teammate work and the teammate ended on a question, the
Chief's reply through coordinate_bots in a later turn started a new job in the
teammate's thread. The parked job kept waiting, its question unanswered, and
the Chief never got its result. A correction sent while the teammate worked
also only queued behind the running job, and the Chief could only send to its
standing thread or a new one.
One rule now, the same on the desktop and on a Cloud: what the bot that handed
work on sends to the thread that work runs in goes into that work.
- Work parked on a question (NEEDS INPUT, or a question card its turn waits on)
is answered by the requester's message to that thread, in any later turn and
without `answers`; it runs on with `@Clive answered: "…"` and reports once to
the turn that handed it out. A sign-in or another card only the person can act
on is never settled this way.
- Work still running gets the message in its running turn, read at its next step
as a person's line sent mid-turn is (the loop guard's steer pair, now shared).
It shows in that thread as the requester's (peerAsk, aside) and "Sent to …" in
the requester's chat; the work's one result still comes back once. Only when
the engine cannot take a message mid-turn does it run next as new work.
- Work handed out in the sending turn itself stays its own job, so two
assignments in one turn are still two.
- coordinate_bots `thread` also takes the id of a thread the sender opened on
that teammate (a receipt's threadId, or list_threads); any other id is refused
with where ids come from. Rework no longer skips the relay.
- The requester's turns list a teammate waiting on a question with the question's
words, its thread id, and that sending the answer there answers it.
Covered already on main (#3930): the requester is resumed with a teammate's
question at every level, Full access makes it the requester's to decide, and a
parked question no longer expires after 30 minutes.
Tests: server/teammate-follow-ups.e2e.test.ts (one server, scripted engine):
a later reply answers a NEEDS INPUT question and an ask-tool card, a correction
reaches the running turn, a thread id picks the thread and a foreign one is
refused (these five fail on main), and two assignments from one turn stay two
(the guard for the same-turn rule).
server/host/question-routing.test.ts covers the relay's rules; envelope.test.ts
the framing. direct-coordination's "holds a follow-up" case now expects the
follow-up in the running turn (changed deliberately), and so does the relay unit
test that took a same-sender message for new work. The tool catalog goldens are
regenerated and each profile's budget baseline moved by the 114 bytes the
coordinate_bots description and thread parameter add.

Walkthrough
Coordination requests can target an existing teammate thread. Eligible messages can answer waiting questions or reach running work through mid-turn steering when supported. The changes also update tool contracts, routing tests, end-to-end tests, test helpers, and verification documentation.
coordinate_bots.thread accepts thread IDs, and thread lookup checks that the sender opened the selected, unarchived, non-room thread. Tool schemas and profile metadata are updated to match.
Eligible later messages can answer waiting questions without an assignment ID. When no question is selected, routing can steer matching running work; successful steering records the update and returns an injected receipt.
Follow-up scenarios and test support docs/verification/*, server/direct-coordination.e2e.test.ts, server/teammate-follow-ups.e2e.test.ts
Tests cover question answers, running-turn updates, selected threads, separate assignments, and refusal cases. Test helpers support delayed steps and replay of steered messages.

The new follow-up routing can send a message to the wrong place or settle a question reserved for the person. On a personal Cloud, a guest conversation may also reach work opened in the owner's conversation. Fix the audience check and the person-only exclusion before merging; the other routing and retry problems are smaller but should be fixed too.

Honor an explicitly selected thread before answering a carried question.
A named thread is resolved and passed to relay, but the carried-question branch runs first and can answer a question from another thread. Preserve carried answers for the default "standing" selection. Restrict the carried match when the caller explicitly selects a different thread. Pass the raw call.thread value, or an equivalent explicit-selection flag, into relay; the resolved input.threadId cannot distinguish "standing" from an explicitly selected thread.

Exclude person-only text questions from the implicit thread-answer path.
personOnly marks payments, passwords, secrets, and similar questions as person-only. A parked NEEDS INPUT: node without cards still reaches the ownWork fallback when answers is omitted, and the next branch calls answerNode with a bot answerer. This can let a later bot message settle a person-only text question.
Keep ordinary text questions answerable. Exclude person-only questions from this implicit fallback and leave the explicit answers route unchanged.

Restrict explicit thread IDs to the requester's conversation.
A personal-Cloud guest turn can invoke coordinate_bots, and list_threads can expose the sender bot's owner-opened teammate threads. The personal-Cloud path bypasses the opener check, so workThreadFor accepts an owner-opened thread when the guest supplies its ID. Relay then uses that thread without an audience check.
Compare openedBy.threadId with input.fromThreadId before returning an explicit task.

Preserve an indeterminate steer in question routing.
When adapter.steer() rejects, steerThread propagates the rejection. handOn then exits before creating its injected receipt, and coordinateBots records a failed receipt. If the adapter accepted the message before rejecting, a retry can send it twice. Return "indeterminate" on rejection, as the direct-send path does.

Compare the destination thread in the sibling duplicate check.
RuntimeCoordinator.enqueue() treats a send as a duplicate when an earlier child of the same parent has the same bot, group, brief, and mode. It does not compare target.threadId. If one sender turn sends the same message to the same bot through two coordinate_bots calls with different thread values, the second call returns the first assignment's receipt. No work starts in the second thread.
Do not add the thread to the match for every send. Fresh-thread sends create a new thread before enqueue() runs, so their thread IDs never match. Repeated identical fresh sends would then start a second job. Keep the current duplicate behavior for fresh sends. Apply the thread comparison only when the send targets an existing thread.

Review comment at @server/index.ts at line 13975:
Update the sibling duplicate check in RuntimeCoordinator.enqueue() to compare
the destination thread for sends targeting an existing thread, so sends to
different threads are not treated as duplicates. Preserve the current duplicate
behavior for fresh-thread sends; do not apply the thread comparison to them.

Why
When a Chief handed a teammate work and the teammate ended on a question (a
NEEDS INPUT:park, or a card from its ask tool), the Chief's reply throughcoordinate_botsin a later turn started a new job in the teammate's thread. The parked job kept waiting with its question unanswered, and the Chief never got that work's result. A correction sent while the teammate was still working only queued behind the running job, and the Chief could send only to its standing thread or a new one, never to one particular thread it had opened.What was already covered on main (#3930, via the train #3999)
inputWaitMsis infinite, and no host sets it.answers, or came from the very turn that carried it. In any later turn the reply became new work. This PR fixes that.One rule, the same on the desktop and on a Cloud

The work runs on with@Clive answered: "…", its card says Clive answered, and it reports once to the turn that handed it out. A sign-in, or any other card only the person can act on, is never settled this way.threadtakes a thread id: coordinate_botsthreadnow also accepts the id of a thread the sender opened on that teammate (a receipt'sthreadId, orlist_threads). Any other id is refused with where ids come from. The tool description stays short. It grew by 114 bytes, and every profile's budget baseline moved by exactly that.No settings or switches.
