Available Now: Use docx.OpenDocument() - See examples/12_read_and_modify/

Phase 10 Backlog

  • P0 • Reader infrastructure (4h): Create internal/reader/ package, handle ZIP extraction, relationship resolution, shared util reuse. (Completed Oct 28 2025 — internal/reader package + round-trip test)
  • P0 • XML deserialization (6h): Map word/document.xml, styles, rels, media into structured models; preserve unknown nodes where possible. (In progress — generic XML tree parsing ready for document/styles/headers)
  • P0 • Domain reconstruction (4h): Build docxDocument, sections, paragraphs, runs, tables, media instances from parsed data; sync with managers. (In progress — paragraph properties, run text, tables, and inline image hydration complete)
  • P1 • Public API (2h): Expose OpenDocument(path string) and streaming variant; wire configuration, validation, error propagation. (In progress — path, bytes, and reader helpers available; needs advanced reconstruction before GA)
  • P1 • Round-trip tests (3h): Add fixture documents and regression tests covering simple, advanced, images, tables, and round-trip flows.
  • P2 • Example & docs (1h): Publish examples/10_modify_document/ plus doc updates describing read/modify workflow and limitations.

Milestones:

  1. Reader infrastructure merged and gated behind feature flag (ETA week 1).
  2. Domain reconstruction validated by round-trip test suite (ETA week 2).
  3. Public API + docs shipped, enabling beta users to exercise read/modify scenarios (ETA week 3).

Custom Styles (Planned for v2.2)

Priority: LOW
Estimated Effort: 6-8 hours
Target Release: v2.2.0 (Q3 2026+)

Features:

  • ⏳ Custom paragraph style creation
  • ⏳ Custom character style creation
  • ⏳ Style modification
  • ⏳ Style inheritance

Use Cases: Brand-specific styling beyond built-in styles.

Value: LOW - 40+ built-in styles cover most needs

Serialization Order Optimization (Planned for v2.2)

Priority: LOW
Estimated Effort: 2-4 hours
Target Release: v2.2.0 (Q3 2026+)

Features:

  • ⏳ Maintain insertion order for paragraphs and tables
  • ⏳ Mixed element serialization

Use Cases: Documents where exact insertion order matters.

Value: LOW - Current behavior works, just not ideal

Advanced Field Features (Future)

  • ⏳ Field update/recalculation
  • ⏳ Custom field types
  • ⏳ Field validation
  • ⏳ Conditional fields (IF, COMPARE)

Advanced Table Features (Future)

  • ⏳ Conditional content
  • ⏳ Template validation

🔧 Known Limitations and Workarounds

1. Strict OOXML Validation (DocxValidator)

Status: ✅ Resolved (October 29, 2025)

Outcome:

  • Table serialization now emits only the strict-compliant w:tblLook w:val bitmask (transitional hint attributes removed).
  • Styles serialization no longer injects w:docDefaults, satisfying the strict schema.
  • examples/run_all_examples.sh filters legacy comparison artifacts so only freshly generated documents are validated.
  • DocxValidator (strict) passes for all 12 documents generated by the example suite.

Notes:

  • Regression guard: keep DocxValidator in the example pipeline to ensure future changes remain strict-compliant.
  • Legacy reference documents under examples/09_advanced_tables/ remain available but are excluded from automated validation.

2. Style Retrieval

File: internal/core/paragraph.go:231
Limitation: paragraph.Style() returns nil (cannot retrieve applied style).
Comment: "Style retrieval from the style manager is not yet implemented"

Workaround: Track applied style names in your own code when calling SetStyle().

Planned for: v2.2.0 (Q3 2026+)

3. Custom Styles

Limitation: Can only use built-in styles (40+ available).

Workaround: Use built-in styles that closely match your needs, or modify the style XML manually after generation.

Planned for: v2.2.0 (Q3 2026+)

4. Document Reading

Limitation: Cannot open and modify existing .docx files (write-only mode).

Workaround: Generate new documents only, or use v1 for reading existing documents.

Planned for: v2.1.0 (Q2 2026) - HIGH PRIORITY

5. Field Calculation

Limitation: Fields are generated with dirty flag (Word recalculates on open).

Workaround: This is standard behavior - Word will update fields when the document is opened. For manual updates, press Ctrl+A, F9 in Word.

Note: Not a bug - this is how Microsoft Word works

6. Insertion Order in Serializer

File: internal/serializer/serializer.go:544
Limitation: Paragraphs and tables may not serialize in strict insertion order.
Code: // TODO: Maintain insertion order

Current Behavior: All paragraphs appear first, then all tables
Expected Behavior: Elements should appear in the order they were added

Workaround: Design documents with all paragraphs first, then tables. This is an optimization issue and doesn't affect document validity.

Planned for: v2.2.0 (Q3 2026+) - LOW PRIORITY

7. Deprecated API Pattern

File: internal/core/paragraph.go:89
Function: Paragraph.AddField()
Message: "use AddRun() and run.AddField() instead"

Note: This is NOT a limitation - just a deprecated API pattern. Fields work perfectly via run.AddField(field). All 9 field types are fully implemented and functional.
