Map View

Presumably uses native map where applicable (e.g. Apple Maps on iOS/Mac, presumably Google Maps on Android) and then something else elsewhere (maybe OpenStreetMap?)

We might want to give people the option to use the same mapping platform on every platform as well for cases where people need to do more advanced mapping like displaying routes or heatmaps etc

Really it should be a unified view API with swappable backend. Other than Apple which provides native MapKit usage for free on their own platforms, most map services are paid so it makes no sense to lock-in.

Yeah exactly. And backends could provide further map-specific APIs, because the unified API surface will probably have to be pretty restrictive (depending on how different the various backends are). Each platform will support its native map view (if such a thing exists) and a free to use cross platform that all backends support.

Turns out that the Google Maps MapView requires Google Play services to be available on the device, so not all Android devices will have it. Even when it is available, it requires an API key. So while it might not be a bad idea to offer as an option it maybe shouldn't be the default.
