would be nice to provide a UI notification for new posts in a channel. I'm thinking maybe a fadeIn/Out ("glow") yellow or something.

honestly, have the phone notify if your handle is referenced in a channel. This is probably not the primary way folks will connect to IRC. Having the device notify and allow reaction will keep folks connected.
