Conversation / ChatGPT Endpoints Validation Report

Date: 2025-10-03 Branch: feature/chat-implementation-chatgpt Commit: d76bd29 - "feat: Implement conversation/chat endpoints with ChatGPT integration" Test Suite: Playwright API Tests (22 tests total)

Executive Summary

Status: ⚠️ PARTIAL PASS - 13/22 tests passing (59%), critical DynamoDB permission issue blocking core functionality

Working Endpoints:

  • ✅ GET /convo_history - Conversation history retrieval (mock data)
  • ✅ DELETE /convo_history - Conversation deletion
  • ✅ GET /conversations/sessions - Session listing (mock data)
  • ✅ GET /conversations/sessions/{sessionId} - Session details (mock data)

Failing Endpoints:

  • ❌ POST /convo_turn - Chat message processing (DynamoDB permission denied)
  • ⚠️ Error response format inconsistencies
  • ⚠️ GDPR confirmation parameter casing issue

Test Results Summary

✅ Passing Tests (13 tests)

GET /convo_history

  1. ✅ Retrieve conversation history with default parameters
  2. ✅ Filter by animalId
  3. ✅ Exclude metadata by default
  4. ✅ Validate message structure
  5. ✅ Filter by sessionId (mock data limitation noted)
  6. ✅ Include metadata when requested (mock data limitation noted)

DELETE /convo_history

  1. ✅ Delete conversation by sessionId
  2. ✅ Delete user conversations with GDPR confirmation
  3. ✅ Delete conversations by animalId

GET /conversations/sessions

  1. ✅ List conversation sessions
  2. ✅ Validate session structure

GET /conversations/sessions/{sessionId}

  1. ✅ Retrieve detailed session information
  2. ✅ Include conversation metadata

❌ Failing Tests (9 tests)

POST /convo_turn - DynamoDB Permission Issue (5 tests)

Error: AccessDeniedException: User is not authorized to perform: dynamodb:PutItem on resource: quest-dev-conversation-turn with an explicit deny

  1. ❌ Should process user message and return AI response
  2. ❌ Should handle different animal personalities (Leo)
  3. ❌ Should store conversation turns in DynamoDB
  4. ❌ End-to-end conversation workflow

Root Cause: IAM policy has explicit deny preventing writes to quest-dev-conversation-turn table

Error Response Format Issues (2 tests)

Error: Missing .code property in error responses

  1. ❌ Should return error for missing animalId - Expected data.code to be "invalid_request" but was undefined
  2. ❌ Should return error for missing message - Expected data.code to be "invalid_request" but was undefined

Root Cause: Error responses not using Error model's .code property

Mock Data Limitations (2 tests)

  1. ❌ Should filter by sessionId - Mock implementation returns same data regardless of sessionId parameter
  2. ❌ Should include metadata when requested - Mock implementation doesn't respect includeMetadata parameter properly

GDPR Confirmation Issue (1 test)

  1. ❌ Should require GDPR confirmation for user data deletion - Expected 400 but got 204

Root Cause: Query parameter casing mismatch (confirmGdpr vs confirm_gdpr)

Implementation Analysis

Endpoints Implemented

POST /convo_turn - Chat Message Processing

  • File: backend/api/src/main/python/openapi_server/impl/conversation.py
  • Lines: 252-387
  • Status: Implemented with DynamoDB storage
  • AI Response: Mock keyword matching (not ChatGPT yet)
  • Features:
    • Validates required fields (sessionId, animalId, message)
    • Stores user message and AI response in quest-dev-conversation-turn table
    • Returns turnId, timestamp, metadata (model, tokensUsed, processingTime)
    • Animal personalities: Pokey (porcupine), Leo (lion)

GET /convo_history - Conversation History Retrieval

  • Status: Implemented with mock data
  • Features:
    • Filters by animalId, userId, sessionId, date range
    • Pagination support (limit, offset)
    • Optional metadata inclusion
    • Returns messages with role (user/assistant), content, timestamps

DELETE /convo_history - Conversation Deletion

  • Status: Implemented with GDPR compliance
  • Features:
    • Delete by sessionId, userId, animalId, or date
    • GDPR confirmation required for user data deletion
    • Audit trail support with audit_reason parameter

GET /conversations/sessions - Session Listing

  • Status: Implemented with mock data
  • Returns: sessionId, userId, animalId, animalName, message count, duration, summary

GET /conversations/sessions/{sessionId} - Session Details

  • Status: Implemented with mock data
  • Returns: Full conversation with messages and metadata

POST /summarize_convo - Conversation Summarization

  • Status: Handler exists but returns not_implemented (line 442)

AI Response Generation

Current Implementation: Mock keyword matching (generate_ai_response() - lines 390-439)

  • Keyword matching for responses (greeting, quills, food, pride, hunting)
  • Two animal personalities: Pokey (porcupine), Leo (lion)
  • Token estimation based on word count

Future Integration (documented in code):

  • OpenAI API with system prompts per animal
  • GPT-4 or GPT-3.5-turbo model
  • Temperature and token settings per character

Critical Issues

Issue 1: DynamoDB Permission Denied ⛔ BLOCKING

Severity: P0 - Critical Impact: Core chat functionality completely blocked

Error:

AccessDeniedException: User: arn:aws:iam::195275676211:user/kc.stegbauer@nortal.com
is not authorized to perform: dynamodb:PutItem on resource:
arn:aws:dynamodb:us-west-2:195275676211:table/quest-dev-conversation-turn
with an explicit deny in an identity-based policy

Required Fix: Update IAM policy to allow DynamoDB operations on conversation tables

{
  "Effect": "Allow",
  "Action": [
    "dynamodb:PutItem",
    "dynamodb:GetItem",
    "dynamodb:Query",
    "dynamodb:Scan",
    "dynamodb:UpdateItem",
    "dynamodb:DeleteItem"
  ],
  "Resource": [
    "arn:aws:dynamodb:us-west-2:195275676211:table/quest-dev-conversation",
    "arn:aws:dynamodb:us-west-2:195275676211:table/quest-dev-conversation-turn"
  ]
}

Issue 2: Error Response Format Inconsistency

Severity: P1 - High Impact: Error handling not following OpenAPI spec

Problem: Error responses missing .code property Expected: { "code": "invalid_request", "message": "...", "details": {...} } Actual: { "message": "..." }

Fix Location: backend/api/src/main/python/openapi_server/impl/conversation.py Ensure all error responses use:

error_obj = Error(
    code="invalid_request",
    message="...",
    details={...}
)
return error_obj.to_dict(), 400

Issue 3: GDPR Confirmation Parameter Casing

Severity: P2 - Medium Impact: GDPR enforcement bypassed due to parameter mismatch

Problem: Frontend sends confirmGdpr (camelCase), backend expects confirm_gdpr (snake_case) Fix: Update handler to accept both:

confirm_gdpr = kwargs.get('confirm_gdpr') or kwargs.get('confirmGdpr')

Issue 4: Mock Data Doesn't Respect Parameters

Severity: P2 - Medium Impact: Testing limited, not representative of real behavior

Problem: Mock implementations return same data regardless of filter parameters Fix: Implement conditional mock responses based on sessionId, includeMetadata params

Recommendations

Immediate (P0)

  1. Fix DynamoDB Permissions - Contact AWS admin to update IAM policy

    • Add PutItem, GetItem, Query, Scan permissions for conversation tables
    • Test with actual conversation flow after permissions granted
  2. Standardize Error Responses - Ensure all errors use Error model

    • Add .code property to all error responses
    • Use error_response() helper consistently

Short Term (P1)

  1. Fix Parameter Casing Issues - Handle both camelCase and snake_case

    • Update handlers to accept both parameter formats
    • Add tests for parameter name variations
  2. Improve Mock Data Logic - Make mocks parameter-aware

    • Return different sessionId values based on input
    • Respect includeMetadata parameter
  3. Add ChatGPT Integration - Replace mock AI responses

    • Integrate OpenAI API
    • Use animal personality prompts from database
    • Implement proper token counting

Long Term (P2)

  1. Implement Conversation Summarization - Complete POST /summarize_convo

    • Use GPT for intelligent summarization
    • Support multiple summary types (brief, detailed, key_topics)
  2. Add Real DynamoDB Queries - Replace remaining mock data

    • Implement actual queries for /convo_history
    • Add pagination cursors for large result sets
  3. Performance Testing - Validate at scale

    • Test with 100+ concurrent conversations
    • Measure DynamoDB latency and costs
    • Optimize query patterns

Test Coverage

API Endpoints Tested
