Family Management Frontend Validation Report

Date: 2025-09-17 Scope: Frontend-Backend Integration with Bidirectional References and RBAC

Executive Summary

Successfully implemented and validated the complete family management system with:

  • Bidirectional ID-based relationships between users and families
  • Role-based access control (admin edit, member view)
  • Frontend components updated for new data model
  • E2E tests confirming functionality
  • DynamoDB persistence with data integrity

Validation Results

1. Admin Functionality ✅

Test: Admin can create, view, edit, and delete families

  • Admin role badge (purple) displays correctly
  • All CRUD operations successful via API

2. Member View-Only Access ✅

Test: Family members can only view their families

Evidence:

  • Parent role badge (green) displays correctly
  • API returns 403 for edit attempts

3. Bidirectional References ✅

Test: User-Family relationships maintained in both directions

  • Creating family adds familyId to all member users

1. Admin submits form with parent/student details
2. Backend creates/finds users by email
3. Family created with user IDs
4. Each user's familyIds[] updated
5. Frontend receives family with populated user details
6. UI shows family with names (resolved from IDs)

View Family Flow

1. User requests family details
2. Backend checks if user.familyIds includes requested family
3. If authorized, fetch family and batch-fetch users
4. Return family with populated details + permission flags
5. Frontend shows appropriate UI based on canEdit flag

Security Validation

Security Features Implemented

  1. Backend Enforcement: All permission checks in API layer
  2. Frontend Protection: UI elements hidden based on role
  3. Token Validation: JWT tokens include role claim
  4. Audit Trail: All operations tracked with user identification
  5. Soft Delete: Data preservation for compliance

Performance Considerations

Optimizations Implemented

  1. Batch User Fetching: Single query for all family members
  2. ID-Based Lookups: O(1) set operations for relationships
  3. Lazy Loading: User details fetched only when needed
  4. Frontend Caching: User details cached per session

Known Issues & Limitations

Current Limitations

  1. No User Search UI: Must know exact email for existing users
  2. No Bulk Operations: Single family operations only
  3. No Family Invitations: Users must be created by admin
  4. Limited Error Messages: Generic API errors in some cases

Recommended Improvements

  1. User Picker Component: Searchable dropdown for existing users
  2. Family Templates: Common family configurations
  3. Bulk Import: CSV upload for multiple families
  4. Activity History: Track all family modifications
  5. Email Notifications: Notify members of changes

Conclusion

  4. Handles edge cases like non-member access attempts

Next Steps

  1. Deploy to staging environment
  2. Conduct user acceptance testing
