REQUEST: New repository opentelemetry-for-opentelemetry

Part of open-telemetry/opentelemetry.io#9559, relates to #3368.

Requesting a new repository for the site-observability project. This repository will host the IaC and configs for a public Collector + backends stack that initially ingests telemetry from opentelemetry.io and explorer.opentelemetry.io, and exposes public read-only dashboards.

Repo name: opentelemetry-for-opentelemetry

hi @vitorvasc! a couple of questions:

• does it need to be a separate repo? could it be hosted in the opentelemetry.io repo? (asking because each repo comes with some maintenance overhead for us)
• if it does need to be a separate repo, any other suggestions for naming? "opentelemetry-for-opentelemetry" could mean lots of things

does it need to be a separate repo? could it be hosted in the opentelemetry.io repo?

It could live in the .io repo, but the intention is to not scope these components to the main website only, we're aiming to support the explorer.opentelemetry.io from day one as well. As the infrastructure, config files, and workflows aren't related to the site content at all, a separate repo felt cleaner from the beginning.

if it does need to be a separate repo, any other suggestions for naming?

We've been discussing some alternatives for that, e.g. "otel-for-otel-infra", "opentelemetry-website-infra", "opentelemetry-sites-infra", "opentelemetry.io-site-infra", "opentelemetry-website-ops", or any combination that's actually self-explanatory. We're also not limited to those, suggestions are always welcome!

thanks for thinking of other names, these are probably my personal favorites:

• opentelemetry.io-infra
• opentelemetry-website-infra

but the others are good too

the only one that doesn't feel self-explanatory is otel-for-otel-infra

@trask - thanks! We also ran a poll on the approvers channel and ended up choosing opentelemetry-website-infra.

Just opened a PR to rename the existing repo: open-telemetry/admin#799. 🙂
