I think a feature should be added to display fortifications (optionaly). In my example, Saint-Martin-de-Ré is a heavily fortified city by Vauban (17th century). The fortifications are part of the identity of the city. Also, the citadel is on the major part of the city.
For Hué, Kyoto, Tokyo or Beijing the Imperial cities are surrounded by water so walls can be easily guessed and the map render well the city history. But not for Saint-Martin because there is no water but only big ditches.
Note: my fork branch is too different from the original to be easily made as an easy pull request by me :-s
