Vibe Coding with OpenAlex — Outline

2. What is Vibe Coding?

  • English is the new coding language — highest abstraction
  • GUIs going away — AI handles natural language, translates to database
  • Chainsaw metaphor — powerful, fast, can cut your leg off
  • Harder than normal coding — think more, not less

3. Google Sheets Demo (Claude Desktop)

  • Open spreadsheet: link
  • Prompt for OA lookup function
  • Paste into Apps Script, show it working
  • Transition: "Why a spreadsheet when you can have a dashboard?"

4. Start Longer Demos (parallel)

Kick these off, let them run while talking:

  • 3D Globe — UNC collabs
  • Peer Reviewer Finder — keyword search + conflict check
  • Citation Network — altmetrics papers
  • Coauthor Compliance Check — SFU + Iran affiliations

5. Quick Demos (while long ones run)

  • OA Dashboard — same as Sheets but auto-updating
  • Impact Report — "make me sound smart" → iterate live
  • Delve Detector — AI-authored papers, gets a laugh
  • Topic Browser — navigate 4-level hierarchy
  • University Trends — Google Trends style

6. Filler Topics (as needed)

  • Get Claude in a loop — view its own work
  • Memento metaphor — documentation = tattoos
  • Models do the minimum — watch for shortcuts
  • Touch grass — parallel Claudes, also go outside
  • Vibe coding tools — Desktop, Code, Cursor, etc.
  • OpenAlex data note — affiliation bug, fixing it
  • Hallucinations — less common now, open data = receipts

7. Ethics

  • Environmental: compare to baseline, informed choice
  • Corporate concentration: Mistral, open source options
  • Data sovereignty: where does data go?
  • Framing: give info, let people choose

8. Check on Long Demos

  • Show results as they finish
  • Highlight interesting outputs

9. Closing

  • Next month: agents, skills, MCP, CLI, orchestration
