Is there any way to get total number of reads in the alignment bam file?

Hello,
I wanted to create a vector of read ids with some statistics on each alignment. For this, I would like to pre-allocate the space for the vector. Is there any way in bamtools to get the number of alignment lines or reads in the bam file.
