Add a "Show credits" button in settings

Every video game today has credits. So why not osu! ?

The button would be located at the bottom of the settings page and would first display all the devs employed at ppy Pty ltd., followed by all other users who have ever made a contribution to the GitHub pages, in descendant order of how many contributions they made.

The people who made this game should be better credited than just a barely visible wiki page that only shows a few of the developers.

This will probably be a controversial take but I'm opposed. My reasoning is very similar to being opposed to ppy/osu-web#11005: it creates an incentive for people to push low quality contributions to get themselves into credits at all.

Sure osu!stream might have had something of this sort but osu!stream was a closed source project with a fixed team so the above wasn't a problem. And I would be opposed to excluding external contributors from credits; either everyone gets on the credits or nobody does, and if everyone can't (for the reason listed above), then I'd say this just should not exist.

There's also the added overhead of maintaining the credits list and updating it each release etc.

Changelogs are there for the people who care.

I can see your point.

I also realized that there may be another issue: People may fight for the top spot in contributions, flooding the entire GitHub page with hundreds of low quality contributions.

However, maybe we could try to punish that by making any rejected contribution count as -1 contributions.

And I wouldn't be opposed to people going on this page to make just one contribution. It's not a bad thing making it easy to get to the credits.

If this was done, it would only show the core team along with select contributors that we choose (aka "Regular Contributors"), not all contributors.

Alternatively, we could make a new currency similar to Kudosu but for GitHub contributions, and the main devs could award that currency. The currency is displayed on the user page and would indicate how much effort it took to write that code. And the leaderboards would count all players with that currency, in decreasing order of how much.

This is a very bad approach. It is a golden rule in the gaming industry that everyone must be credited.

Even if you worked at a gaming company for only a few hours, as long as you've written one line of code, you're in the credits.

Crediting only the top few is highly disrespectful to all people who made small changes to the game. That's what credits are for.

If the credits do not contain everyone, they're not credits. Period. Either everyone goes in, or nobody goes in. There's no in-between.

If we can't find a way to make good credits for an open source project, then there should be none.

Considering the fact that you've rulled out crediting everyone and @bdach rulled out only crediting the dev team, I will close this as the only real option is to not add credits.
