whyfetch

whyfetch gets stock prices from Yahoo Finance and updates entries in a ledger commodity price database.

Price databases are simply text files with entries with the following syntax:

P YYYY/MM/DD HH:MM:SS "COMMODITY" PRICE CURRENCY

whyfetch automatically identifies the commodity and adds a new, updated entry under the latest entry for each commodity.

Installation

Install whyfetch manually. It might not be useful enough to be in MELPA.

Usage

In the ledger database file, run M-x whyfetch-update-ledger-db-prices and let whyfetch do its magic.

If there is a Bitcoin entry (commodity code BTC), whyfetch will not only get the latest price in USD, but also convert it to any other currency given at the end of the entry. For example, if whyfetch finds the line

P 2022/10/04 18:39:45 "BTC" 105205.49 BRL

it will know to convert BTC into BRL. Other coins are not supported for the time being.

Bugs

whyfetch seems to randomly fail after the first commodity is processed. I have tried debugging it to no avail so far.
