Possible to disconnect a BLOCK'd client?

Is there a way to gracefully disconnect a client while that client is blocking? I have a script where my redis client indefinitely blocks with XREAD BLOCK 0.... I'd like to abort that, or just drop the connection, but quit() never executes (because of the block, I assume) and disconnect() generates an error. If I exit my process the connection seems to end without any errors so .. it seems like there might be some disconnection function or technique that I'm missing?
