Binaural Beats & Isochronic Tones
This project is based on the concept of Brainwave Entrainment, which uses rhythmic audio stimuli to synchronize brainwave frequencies. The following studies present scientific evidence supporting the potential effects of binaural beats and isochronic tones on mental states such as stress, anxiety, and sleep.
Title: Effectiveness of Acoustic Neurostimulation in Stress, Anxiety, Depression, and Sleep Quality
Source: Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Brazil
Link: https://repositorio.ufsc.br/handle/123456789/249853
-
Participants: 37 healthy adults, split into 4 groups:
- Control (white noise)
- Binaural Beats (BBN)
- Isochronic Tones (TISO)
- Combined (BBN + TISO)
-
Protocol: 20-minute daily sessions for 21 consecutive days (performed at home)
-
Results:
✅ Significant reduction in stress, anxiety, and depression (BBN & TISO)
✅ Improved sleep quality (BBN, TISO & Combined)
✅ EEG confirmed brainwave entrainment in alpha, theta, delta, and beta bands
Title: Exploration of Auditory Stimuli for Brainwave Entrainment
Source: Universidade Católica Portuguesa
Link: https://repositorio.ucp.pt/handle/10400.14/26624
-
Participants: 30 users tested and created custom auditory stimuli using software tools.
-
Findings:
✅ Theta frequencies were most used for calming effects
✅ Alpha frequencies and isochronic tones were preferred for stimulating effects
✅ Sine waveforms were predominant, often combined with white or pink noise -
Conclusion:
- Although clear patterns were observed, user preferences varied.
- Results suggest the importance of personalization in audio brainwave entrainment.
Title: Exploring the Effects of Binaural and Isochronic Stimulation in the 12–20 Hz Range
Source: Intelecto em Ação

-
Focus: Investigates the effect of alpha and beta frequency stimulation on focus, attention, and relaxation.
-
Findings:
✅ Alpha/Beta stimulation may increase mental clarity and focus
✅ Potential for promoting light relaxation
⚠️ Effects vary by individual; more empirical studies are needed
Title: Binaural beats to entrain the brain? A systematic review of the effects of binaural beat stimulation on brain oscillatory activity, and the implications for psychological research and intervention
Source: University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany
Link: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37205669/
-
Scope: A meta-analysis of 14 studies assessing whether binaural beats affect EEG brain activity.
-
Findings:
✅ 5 studies reported successful brainwave entrainment
❌ 8 studies reported no significant EEG effects
⚠️ 1 study had mixed outcomes depending on context -
Conclusion:
- The review highlights inconsistent findings due to differences in methodology and protocols.
- Emphasizes the need for standardized research.
- Still, some evidence supports a neurophysiological basis for binaural beats as a cognitive/therapeutic tool.
While results are still mixed in the scientific literature, multiple peer-reviewed studies indicate that binaural beats and isochronic tones may influence brainwave activity and help with stress reduction, anxiety relief, relaxation, and sleep improvement. Effects can vary across individuals, and more research is needed — but there is growing evidence supporting their potential use as a non-invasive mental wellness tool.
