Question: Markdown: Continue Numbering

Is there a syntax for continuing numbering in an ordered list?

Example:

1. Topic 1
    
    * sub-topic 1
    * sub-topic 2
    * sub-topic 3

2. Topic 2

The Markdown example displays correctly in Github, but in Slate, numbering starts over at 1 for Topic 2.

EDIT: RESOLVED

I removed the space between the topics and the sub-topics and reduced sub-topic's leading spaces from 4 to 2:

1. Topic 1
  * sub-topic 1
  * sub-topic 2
2. Topic 2
  * sub-topic 1
  * sub-topic 2
