Unable to install Slate (API documentation tool) on Windows using Vagrant and VirtualBox (Error: couldn't open “base”)

I need to install Slate on Windows 10, but I am getting a blocking error, and can't find a solution in the documentation. It is recommended that Vagrant be used on Windows 10 according to the official instructions at

The first error message is:

C:\Users\usersname\Documents\Slate>vagrant up No usable default provider could be found for your system.

Vagrant relies on interactions with 3rd party systems, known as "providers", to provide Vagrant with resources to run development environments. Examples are VirtualBox, VMware, Hyper-V.

The easiest solution to this message is to install VirtualBox, which is available for free on all major platforms.

Upon installing VirtualBox, I get this error:

C:\Users\v-joeperez\Documents\Slate>vagrant up Bringing machine 'default' up with 'virtualbox' provider... ==> default: Box 'base' could not be found. Attempting to find and install... default: Box Provider: virtualbox default: Box Version: >= 0 ==> default: Box file was not detected as metadata. Adding it directly... ==> default: Adding box 'base' (v0) for provider: virtualbox default: Downloading: base default: An error occurred while downloading the remote file. The error message, if any, is reproduced below. Please fix this error and try again.

Couldn't open file C:/Users/username/Documents/Slate/base

Any suggestions please?

The directory C:\Users\usersname\Documents\Slate contains the checked out source code of master? What is the contents of C:\Users\usersname\Documents\Slate\Vagrantfile?

The error you're seeing (Box 'base' could not be found. Attempting to find and install... ) would indicate to me that you're running vagrant not in the slate directory (as then you would be seeing something about Box 'ubuntu/bionic64'), but rather from a different directory in which you've maybe run vagrant init which generates a default Vagrantfile that utilizes the box base as a starting point.

I tried reinstalling with your suggestions in mind and the problem is now resolved. Continuing on, another blocking issue occurred. I'll post a separate discussion comment about it. Thanks!

Having something Similar on MAC.

Forked, pulled down the latest. Trying to run with Vagrant following:

Confirmed

• I am in the slate folder
• vagrant init ran inside late folder
• Vagrantfile is in the slate folder and running Vagrant up from here

Any ideas where I am messing up.

What do you mean by this? You should not be running vagrant init as part of setting up slate.

The sequence would be:

git clone https://github.com/slatedocs/slate
cd slate
vagrant up

and then the second line would then mention getting ubuntu/bionic64 box instead of base.

Oh so I did the following

git clone https://github.com/slatedocs/slate
cd slate
vagrant up

Then I get

A Vagrant environment or target machine is required to run this
command. Run vagrant init to create a new Vagrant environment. Or,
get an ID of a target machine from vagrant global-status to run
this command on. A final option is to change to a directory with a
Vagrantfile and to try again.

So I did the following

cd slate
vagrant init ubuntu/bionic64
vagrant up

This does run, but I get

Not sure what I am doing wrong here. But past the base problem. Can't seem to have it come up locally tho.

Any idea where I am going wrong?
