NSF-NeTS: Medium: Design, Analysis, and Control of Quantum Networks

This is a joint project between Yale University and the University of Massachusetts Amherst funded in the US by National Science Foundation (NSF)

Background

Quantum networks promise capabilities classical networks fundamentally cannot offer — provably secure communication, distributed quantum computing across geographically separated processors, and entanglement-enhanced sensing. Getting there is hard for a reason that has no analog in the classical world: entanglement is a fragile, probabilistically-generated, time-limited resource. It is stored in quantum memories that decohere, consumed each time it is used, and degraded by every imperfect operation along the way. This collaborative project between Yale University and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, funded by the National Science Foundation, develops the modeling tools, resource-allocation algorithms, and protocol designs needed to make quantum networks work in practice — under realistic assumptions about memory noise, gate noise, and classical-communication latency.

Goals

Overall, the major goals in this project can be summarized as follows:

Develop performance models for switches and, more generally, quantum networks. This includes models for identifying and classifying the capacity of networks and for calculating fidelity statistics of entanglement delivered to users.

Develop and evaluate resource allocation algorithms appropriate for scheduling and routing entanglement requests in networks with limited memories.

Account for noisy memories in both modeling and resource allocation.

Optimize for classical communications and imperfect local operations in protocol design.
