How do i handle playlists on iPod without duplicating songs?

I have copied my music collection to my iPod. I want to now copy my playlists over. However, when i copy the playlist to the iPod and then check the music on the iPod, I have duplicate songs, one for my collection and one for my playlists. Anyway to get around this? I have a lot of playlists that I want to copy over but don't want the duplicates included.
