space-y utility not applying vertical spacing with inline (span) elements in v4

This is because <span> elements have display: inline by default. space-y-* parent applies margin-bottom to children. However, margin-bottom does not work for display: inline elements, hence the behavior you are describing.

Thanks, that explains the inline part. But it's a bit confusing, because it was working fine before. If you set the playground version to 3.4.17, the space-y works on the spans. Did something change with space-y between v3 and v4?

Yes, the CSS was rewritten to be more performant. With this, the v4 space-y- applies margin-bottom to all but the last element, whereas v3 would apply margin-top to all but the first element.
