Ideas:

Generate anchors for strings etc. only if the anchor would take up less space
than referring to the string directly.  Make this the default mode for scalars.

Match and parse scalars (especially dates) using a 'proper' parser rather than
regexes (advantage of regexes is that it's easy to verify that they match
the specs exactly).
