When I was signing up, I know there was also a screen that told me about needing a number that I can set up an account on Signal on, but it wasn't clear to me that needed to be in addition to whatever # i already use on signal. I thought "oh, yeah, i already do that, so I'm good." I only understood that once you told me, so fine-tuning that language would also be helpful, I think.
