What does the secret parameter actually do?

I read the source and it seems to be ignored and no kind of encryption is being applied anywhere.

If its a no-op property, shouldn't it be removed from the readme?

The secret parameter is required for any session store used in Express. So we include it in our examples. See their documentation for the specifics on what it does:
