Ask about long running background jobs

Hey contributors , I hope you are doing well . I am Jagpreet Singh from Indian Sub-continent , I am new here , I just went through readme file and there is something that I saw is long-running background jobs , could anyone explain me what exactly means it and more elaborate the project, is it for functionality which execute after some specific set of time?.
