Alert - Missing Backups

I would still use a process of daily checks to ensure that backups are working as expected. The summary page allows you to check this quickly across all your SQL instances - and hopefully allows you to deal with issues before they become critical enough for an alert notification. Missing log backups might be more of an immediate issue and warrant an alert notification.
As a workaround, SQL server job failure notifications can be used. But not receiving an alert doesn't mean everything is in a good state (the agent could be stopped or the alert might have failed etc). Daily checks catch this.
