How can I access the content of <li> in the expand method?

I am having trouble accessing the properties of the "li" object in the expand method

li.text(), li.val(), li.html() - none of these work

expand: function(li, effect, force) {

}

any ideas?

well I tried $(li).prop('value'); or $(li).attr('value');, I get undefined

No matter which prop or attr I try I either get undefined or blank

li.attr('value') works if applied to example code using Firefox.

Please, share your code. Maybe I can help debug.
