my confusion:
The configuration is written in package.json. What if I just started using this function recently and switched to the previous branch, the node version is invalid again, and there is no project configuration file?

How would a project configuration file solve that issue? You likely would check that file in as well, so every developer on the project uses the same node-version, right? So if you switch branches, the file would be gone exactly like your package.json edits are gone in your scenario.
