Description

While capturing a screenshot of a freshly generated default app (wails3 init, vanilla-ts) running on an Android emulator, I found two lifecycle bugs. Each one closes the whole app.

1. Activity recreation quits the app

When Android recreates MainActivity, the process and the Go runtime stay alive. Recreation can be triggered by a config change not listed in configChanges, a theme/overlay change, recreate(), and so on. On the first boot of an API 35 emulator, a SystemUI theme overlay change triggered it a few seconds after launch. Two things then went wrong:

  • onDestroy() always called bridge.shutdown() → nativeShutdown → app.Quit().
  • The new Activity's WailsBridge.initialize() called nativeInit, which ran the registered main again. application.New returns the existing app, so App.Run() fails with application is running or a previous run has failed. The template's log.Fatal(err) then exits the process (Zygote: Process … exited cleanly (1)).

Fix:

  • nativeInit now starts main only once per process. Later calls just reattach the new bridge.
  • storeBridgeRef swaps in the new bridge's global ref and releases the previous one, so the destroyed Activity can be garbage-collected.
  • MainActivity.onDestroy only shuts the Go app down when isFinishing() && !isChangingConfigurations().

2. A WebView renderer crash takes the app down

MainActivity's WebViewClient didn't override onRenderProcessGone. A renderer crash or OOM kill therefore aborted the app: [FATAL:crashpad_client_linux.cc] Render process's crash wasn't handled by all associated webviews, triggering application crash.

Fix: onRenderProcessGone now detaches and destroys the dead WebView and calls recreate(). Because of fix 1, the Go app survives and the new Activity gets a fresh WebView.

Both changes are applied to the build_assets template and to the checked-in examples/android and examples/mobile copies.

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • WEP (proposal only; no implementation)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to not work as expected)
  • This change requires a documentation update

How Has This Been Tested?

  • go build of ./pkg/application for GOOS=android with GOARCH=amd64 and arm64 (NDK r26d, cgo).
  • A new TestAndroidActivityRecreationKeepsGoAppRunning in internal/commands checks the template guards. go test ./internal/commands -run TestAndroid passes.
  • On-device, with a default wails3 init app built with wails3 task android:build ARCH=amd64 + android:assemble:apk:
    • Before: on an API 35 Google APIs x86_64 emulator, the activity was relaunched after a theme overlay change. The process then exited with status 1 because main ran a second time.
    • After: on API 34 and API 31 AOSP ATD x86_64 emulators, the WebView renderer crashed and logcat showed WebView render process gone (crashed: true); recreating activity followed by Activity recreated; reattached bridge to running app. The same app process stayed alive and served index.html to the new WebView.

The renderer crash I used to exercise this is environment-specific. The Android emulator's QEMU, running in software mode without KVM, mis-executes phaddd xmm, xmm when source and destination are the same register. That breaks Chromium zlib's SIMD adler32, so V8's snapshot checksum CHECK fails at renderer start. It doesn't happen on real devices or KVM-accelerated emulators, but it made a convenient way to trigger the renderer-gone path.

  • Windows
  • macOS
  • Linux (Ubuntu 24.04 host, Android emulator 37.2.12; API 35 google_apis, API 34 and 31 aosp_atd system images, all x86_64)

Test Configuration

Built from a source checkout of this branch (wails3 installed via go install ./cmd/wails3), Go 1.25, OpenJDK 21, Android SDK platform 35, build-tools 35.0.0, NDK 26.3.11579264.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Android apps recover from unexpected WebView renderer crashes by recreating the activity. After repeated crashes exceed the recovery limit, the app displays a restart message.
    • The Go app continues running during configuration changes, without rerunning its main function when the activity is recreated.
    • Window settings—including screenshot protection, keep-awake, and brightness—are restored after activity recreation.
    • Pending file-picker, camera, location-permission, sensor, and proximity requests are retained during activity recreation.

claude added 2 commits October 5, 2026 14:34
When Android recreates MainActivity (a configuration change not listed in
configChanges, a theme/overlay change, ...) the process and the Go runtime
survive, but:

- onDestroy unconditionally called nativeShutdown, quitting the Go app;
- the new Activity's bridge called nativeInit, which ran the registered
main again. application.New returns the existing App, so App.Run fails
with "application is running or a previous run has failed" and the
default template's log.Fatal exits the process.

The result is that a freshly launched default app can disappear seconds
after start-up (observed on an API 35 emulator when the SystemUI theme
overlay was applied on first boot).

- nativeInit now starts main only once per process; later calls just
  reattach the new bridge.
- storeBridgeRef releases the previous bridge's global reference so the
  destroyed Activity can be collected.
- MainActivity only shuts the Go app down when it is really finishing,
not when it is being recreated.

MainActivity's WebViewClient did not implement onRenderProcessGone, so any
crash or OOM kill of the WebView renderer process made Chromium abort the
whole app ("Render process's crash wasn't handled by all associated
webviews, triggering application crash").

Handle it by detaching and destroying the dead WebView and recreating the
Activity. With the previous commit the Go app survives the recreation and
the new Activity reattaches to it with a fresh WebView.

Walkthrough

Android Activity templates recover from WebView renderer termination and retain pending request and window state across recreation. The JNI bridge refreshes its Activity reference, preserves the Go app during configuration changes, and starts the registered main function only once.

Changes

Android lifecycle recovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Activity recovery and retained state
v3/examples/android/build/.../MainActivity.java, v3/examples/mobile/build/.../MainActivity.java, v3/internal/commands/build_assets/.../MainActivity.java, v3/internal/commands/android_lifecycle_test.go
The Activity templates destroy a terminated WebView and recreate the Activity up to three times within a rolling 60-second window. They retain pending picker and camera state, restore window settings, and shut down the bridge only when the Activity is finishing and not changing configurations. The lifecycle test checks the Android source assets.
Window and permission state restoration
v3/examples/mobile/build/.../WailsBridge.java, v3/internal/commands/build_assets/.../WailsBridge.java, v3/internal/commands/android_permissions_test.go
WailsBridge retains sensor, proximity, location-request, and selected window state. restoreWindowState() associates the recreated Activity with the bridge and reapplies requested settings. The permission test expects the pending request field to be static.
JNI bridge refresh and one-time startup
v3/pkg/application/application_android.go
JNI bridge calls use synchronized, replaceable bridge references and local references. nativeInit starts the registered main function only on the first initialization.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 196fb

The identified Activity-recreation risks are addressed, and no actionable merge-blocking issue remains after normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 196fb

Recovery preserves the running app and reapplies screen-capture protection, but an older queued sensor command can override a later disable during Activity replacement. This affects Android apps using motion or proximity streams; no new camera or location permission bypass was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Cross-bridge sensor forwarding can reverse the current Activity's later disable. An old enable runnable can execute while a new bridge is current, call the replacement setter, and enqueue another enable behind an already queued disable. The forwarded call also restores the process-wide wanted flag. The replacement can therefore resume motion or proximity collection and event delivery after the application requested cancellation. Same-bridge enable idempotency and background unregistering do not preserve latest-request ordering across replacement.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The retained concern affects motion and proximity streams within an Android application's process, including apps generated from the changed template and the matching mobile example. It requires feature requests overlapping bridge replacement; it does not establish access to another application's data or acquisition of additional Android permissions.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A stale enable can cross the ownership transition into the current bridge and defeat a later disable. Sensor listeners then emit motion or proximity payloads through nativeEmitEvent into the running application's event channel. This is a privacy-control ordering concern, not a demonstrated remote exploit or camera/location authorization bypass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Bridge replacement uses an identity-checked Java release and mutex-protected JNI reference swapping. JNI callers acquire local references before invoking Java, preserving reference validity during replacement. These controls address ownership and memory safety but do not invalidate an older command's authority to change current sensor intent.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Normal backgrounding unregisters motion and proximity listeners while retaining their requested state for foreground restoration. Activity finish invokes native shutdown, but App.Quit dispatches to an empty Android destroy implementation; it is not evidence that the process or running Go session terminates. Retained state after finish therefore cannot alone establish a new post-shutdown security defect.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Serialize sensor intent and listener reconciliation under one current-owner ordering policy. A forwarded operation should not rewrite a newer desired state; generation or sequence checks, or reconciliation against the latest desired value, can preserve cancellation across replacement.
  • proposed — Define an explicit feature and pending-request policy for the renderer recovery-limit state, including whether sensitive streams should pause while their interactive controls are unavailable. This is a failure-containment proposal, not a verified unauthorized-data-access finding.

Copilot review overview

🔵 Needs a closer look

The native JNI bridge-ref swap adds a potential cross-thread use-after-free around g_bridge, and verifying Android lifecycle/renderer-crash behavior needs human judgment.

Review effort: Balanced
Findings: 1 High severity

Open (1)
What changed in this PR

This PR fixes two Android lifecycle bugs that each tear down a Wails v3 app. When Android recreates MainActivity (config/theme-overlay change, recreate(), etc.) the process and Go runtime survive, but the old code (a) always called bridge.shutdown() → app.Quit() in onDestroy, and (b) re-ran the registered main on the new Activity, causing App.Run() to fail and the template's log.Fatal to kill the process. It also adds a missing onRenderProcessGone override so a WebView renderer crash no longer aborts the whole app. The changes span the shared Go/JNI layer and the checked-in Java template (plus its two example copies).

Changes:

  • nativeInit now starts main only once per process and otherwise just reattaches the new bridge; storeBridgeRef swaps in the new global ref and releases the previous one.
  • MainActivity.onDestroy only shuts down the Go app when isFinishing() && !isChangingConfigurations().
  • Adds onRenderProcessGone to detach/destroy the dead WebView and recreate() the Activity, plus a template-guard unit test.

- Guard the JNI bridge reference with a mutex. Callers take a local
reference under the lock and use it for the Java call, so replacing (and
deleting) the previous global reference when the Activity is recreated
can no longer race with Go-to-Java calls on other threads.
- Bound renderer-crash recovery: after more than 3 crashes within 60s,
stop recreating and show a static error message instead of looping.
- Keep pending file-picker and camera-capture requests process-scoped so a
result delivered to the recreated Activity still completes the Go
  request waiting on it.

Screen-capture protection (FLAG_SECURE), keep-awake and the brightness
override are flags on the Activity's window. Now that the Go app survives
Activity recreation, a recreated window would silently drop them while the
app still believes they are in effect. Remember the state requested from
Go and re-apply it in onCreate before the new window is shown.

- Count renderer-crash recoveries over a rolling 60s window instead of a

- Make WailsBridge.pendingLocationRequest process-scoped so a location

…sors

- Window-flag updates requested from Go (FLAG_SECURE, keep-awake,
brightness) now run on the UI thread against the Activity that currently
hosts the app, not the Activity of whichever bridge the Go call used. A
screen-protection request racing with Activity recreation could
otherwise land on the old window and leave the new one unprotected while
reporting protected=true. The requested state is volatile so the
  recreated Activity's restoreWindowState() sees it.
- Keep requested motion/proximity streams process-scoped so the new
bridge's onStart resumes them after recreation.
- gofmt the lifecycle test.

- Replace the static currentActivity with the current bridge, and clear it
in MainActivity.onDestroy (only if it still points at that bridge) so a
  destroyed Activity is not retained.
- Motion/proximity requests that reach a replaced bridge are forwarded to
the current one on the UI thread, and a destroyed Activity's bridge no
longer registers listeners, so no sensor stream is left running that
  nothing will unregister.

CI note on 196fbf9a: the red Run Go Tests check is the matrix gate reporting Go tests result: abandoned. It doesn't come from a test failure. In run 37363689036, the ubuntu-24.04 and macos-latest matrix jobs were cancelled after about 15 minutes without a runner ever being assigned (no steps ran). The jobs that did get a runner passed (ubuntu-22.04, windows-latest), and locally go test ./internal/commands passes too. I don't have permission to re-run jobs here (403). Could a maintainer re-run the failed jobs? I'll keep watching the PR until it's green.

CI note on 35ce8a48 (merge of master): Run Go Tests (windows-latest) failed, but it looks like a runner problem, not this change.

  • Same Go code passed: the Go code is identical to 196fbf9a, where the Windows job passed. The master merge only touched changelog.md, UNRELEASED_CHANGELOG.md, the runtime package.json/lockfile and version.txt.
  • Runner hung: the job sat in "Post Checkout code" for about 45 minutes before being marked failed, and its log returns 404, so I can't see the test output.
  • Compiles: GOOS=windows go test -c ./internal/commands and go vet ./pkg/application build cleanly locally. The only vet warnings are existing ones in webview_window_windows.go.
  • Runner shortage: in the same run, ubuntu-24.04 tests, Check Docs, semgrep, CodeQL (Go) and the bundled-runtime check were cancelled after about 15 minutes without a runner, and macOS and ubuntu-22.04 passed.

I can't re-run jobs here (403). Could a maintainer re-run the failed jobs? If Windows fails again with a real log, I'll dig into it.

Automated v3 GA-readiness test result for head 35ce8a48d42b614d33c4068e3cb9a3d2119f39ca

Platform CLI build Unit tests (./pkg/... ./internal/...) Example build (examples/window)
macOS (mac-node1) PASS PASS (51/51 pkgs) PASS
Windows (win-node1) PASS PASS (52/52 pkgs) PASS
Linux not run (Linux node unavailable)

This change targets Android lifecycle code, which was not exercised by this run (no Android target); it only confirms desktop macOS and Windows builds/tests are unaffected. Results match the master baseline at 1a6053d8. The app was not launched because there was no GUI session over SSH. This comment is only a build and test report. It is not a code review.
