Integration with Alert-Triage Service

The inference API is designed to integrate with the AI-SOC alert-triage service:

1. Service Configuration

Add to docker-compose/docker-compose.yml:

  ids-inference:
    build: ./ml_training
    container_name: ids-inference
    ports:
      - "8000:8000"
    volumes:
      - ./models:/app/models:ro
    environment:
      - MODEL_PATH=/app/models
    healthcheck:
      test: ["CMD", "curl", "-f", "http://localhost:8000/health"]
      interval: 30s
      timeout: 10s
      retries: 3

2. Alert-Triage Integration

From the alert-triage service, call the inference API:

import httpx

async def predict_intrusion(flow_features: List[float]) -> dict:
    """
    Call IDS inference API for intrusion prediction
    """
    async with httpx.AsyncClient() as client:
        response = await client.post(
            "http://ids-inference:8000/predict",
            json={
                "features": flow_features,
                "model_name": "random_forest"
            },
            timeout=1.0  # 1 second timeout
        )
        return response.json()

3. Alert Enrichment

Use predictions to enrich security alerts:

# In alert processing pipeline
prediction = await predict_intrusion(flow_features)

alert = {
    "alert_id": alert_id,
    "source_ip": source_ip,
    "destination_ip": dest_ip,
    "ml_prediction": prediction["prediction"],
    "ml_confidence": prediction["confidence"],
    "model_used": prediction["model_used"],
    "risk_score": calculate_risk_score(prediction),
    "timestamp": prediction["timestamp"]
}

Advanced Usage

Custom Training Configuration

Modify training parameters in train_ids_model.py:

# Sample data (for testing)
loader = CICIDSDataLoader(
    dataset_path=DATASET_PATH,
    binary_classification=True,
    sample_frac=0.1  # Use 10% of data
)

# Multi-class classification
loader = CICIDSDataLoader(
    dataset_path=DATASET_PATH,
    binary_classification=False  # 24 attack types + benign
)

Model Hyperparameter Tuning

# Random Forest
rf_model = trainer.train_random_forest(n_estimators=200)

# XGBoost
xgb_model = trainer.train_xgboost(max_depth=15)

# Decision Tree
dt_model = trainer.train_decision_tree(max_depth=30)

Load Pre-Trained Models

import pickle

# Load model
with open('models/random_forest_ids.pkl', 'rb') as f:
    model = pickle.load(f)

# Load scaler
with open('models/scaler.pkl', 'rb') as f:
    scaler = pickle.load(f)

# Make prediction
X_scaled = scaler.transform(X)
prediction = model.predict(X_scaled)

Troubleshooting

Memory Issues

If you encounter memory errors with the full dataset:

  1. Sample the data:

    loader = CICIDSDataLoader(sample_frac=0.5)  # Use 50% of data
  2. Use chunked loading:

    chunk_size = 100000
    for chunk in pd.read_csv(file, chunksize=chunk_size):
        # Process chunk

Model Loading Errors

Ensure models are trained before running the API:

# Train models first
python train_ids_model.py

# Then start API
python inference_api.py

Slow Inference

For faster inference:

  1. Use Decision Tree (fastest)
  2. Enable model caching
  3. Use batch predictions for multiple flows
  4. Deploy with GPU acceleration (XGBoost)

Production Deployment

Docker Deployment

Create Dockerfile:

FROM python:3.11-slim
